 SCHOLARSHIP INSTRUCTIONS AND RULES

Deadline for Application Postmark: October 1, 2011

 1) The Florida Quarter Horse Racing Association, Inc. (FQHRA) Youth Scholarship is for young people planning to make a career in the Quarter Horse business, preferably, but not limited to the Race Horse industry. Scholarship recipients’ chosen career field may include, but not limited to, training, veterinary, track or farm management, breeding, marketing, diagnostics, journalism, research, etc. Applicants may reside in any U.S. State and to be nominated by family members and/or friends of current FQHRA Members.

                a) Recipient must be enrolled full time (at least 12 credit hours) in an accredited college or university for the 2011-2012 school year and the Scholarship Committee must receive proof of this enrollment by October 1, 2011 to disburse scholarship funds for the following semester.

               b) Recipient must be legally residing in the U.S. and in good standing with Local, State and U.S. laws.

               c) Recipient may be:

                                • Graduating 2011 high school year

                                • College freshman, sophomore, junior or senior in the fall semester of 2011.

• Accepted into and enrolled in veterinary school in the fall of 2011. Other graduate degree plans will be considered on an individual basis

 

2) Two (2) $1000.00 scholarships will be awarded by the FQHRA Scholarship Committee, which will choose recipient based upon criteria that include financial need, academic achievement, career plans, previous equine involvement and references.

 

3) Scholarship winners will be decided by the FQHRA Youth Scholarship Committee on Tuesday, November 1, 2011. The scholarship money will then be awarded to the winning recipients by mail notification along with the scholarship check on Friday, November 4, 2011.

 

4) The following information (A through G), unless designated as “Optional,” MUST ACCOMPANY the Applicant’s completed Application Form in the manner described, or the application will be rejected. For copying purposes, please leave all pages loose or in a paper clip; do not put in binder, sheet protector, folder, etc.

 

                a) Typed introductory letter written by Applicant.

                b) Three (3) type written letters of reference, not to be submitted by relatives or guardians, which include the following information:

                                                b1) how well writer knows applicant and for how long, and

b2) verifiable first-hand knowledge of applicant’s activities. One (1) letter must be from a high school (or college, if applicable) teacher/school administrator and at least one (1) letter must be from a professional member of the Equine Industry, who is to document his/her position in the industry.

               c) Recent Certified High School Transcript (or certified College Transcript, if applicable).

               d) Write a 450-550 word, typewritten, double-spaced, single page essay summarizing your thoughts and feelings on the following:

                                                • What your experience with horses has meant to you.

                                                • Why you desire to continue your education in the equine industry.

• What goals you would like to accomplish within the equine industry in 1 year, 3 years, 5 years and 10 years.

                Applicant’s name or family name is not to appear on or within the essay.  Please make this essay fit on one page.

                e) Recent 3”X5” color photograph (head & shoulders only) for publication purposes (will not be returned).

               f) (Optional) Signed copy of 2010 IRS Tax Returns for applicant (if self supporting) or applicant’s parent(s). It is not mandatory, but is strongly recommended, and may be used to break a tie selection.

               g) (Optional) Attachments documenting activities, awards, etc. will be accepted, but must be typewritten and concise, and are limited to 2 additional pages. Do not repeat awards and accomplishments.

 

5) If the recipient chooses to postpone higher education and not enter college full-time for Fall Semester of 2011, the recipient is to contact FQHRA President, Dr. Stephen D. Fisch or Scholarship Committee Chair, Randy Henry to discuss the reason for this decision and the recipient’s future plans. If the recipient does NOT contact FQHRA by October 15, 2011 with this information, the scholarship may be forfeited.

 

6) If the recipient is found to have furnished false information in any required component of this Scholarship Application, the scholarship may be forfeited.
